How to choose a team name

After watching thousands of teams name themselves at our hosted events, our hosts have a short playbook for getting a great name without burning ten minutes of the event on it:

Infographic: how to choose a team name — brainstorm fast, vote between finalists, and pick the name that makes the team laugh

Set a two-minute timer. The best names come fast or not at all. Give the team two minutes to shout options, then vote — a deadline produces funnier names than deliberation does.

Vote between two finalists. A quick this-or-that vote between the top two candidates gets buy-in from the whole team — and a close vote means both names were good.

Mine your inside jokes. The names teams remember years later reference something real: the office coffee machine that never works, the project that shipped at 2am, the boss's catchphrase. "Slack Attack" is good; a pun on YOUR team's actual Slack disaster is better.

Keep it readable-aloud. Your host, quizmaster, or emcee will say this name out loud a dozen times. If it is too long, too crude, or unpronounceable, it dies on the scoreboard. Two to four words is the sweet spot.

Match the name to the stakes. Powerful names ("Kingmakers") fit sales competitions; ironic names ("We Tried") fit trivia nights. A team named The Underdogs winning the whole thing is a story people retell — pick the energy you want.

None of this is just decoration. Psychologists Baumeister and Leary's landmark "need to belong" review in Psychological Bulletin argued that forming group attachments is a fundamental human motivation — and a shared name is the fastest belonging cue a brand-new team can give itself.

    Final Thoughts

Choosing a cool group name or good team name is part of the fun of team building. This step is typically the first collective action a group takes together, and the name can set the tone for the team dynamic. Thinking up a unique or funny team name on the spot can be difficult, and it helps to have suggestions and inspiration. Picking the best team name can make outings more fun and can make winning bragging rights feel extra sweet.
